SLO: Observe and co-teach course integrated library instruction sessions

Task: Observe lectures given by librarians for different courses relating to their subjects. Develop teaching skills and learn the differing techniques to create an effective learning experience for students

Evidence: Evaluative notes on the course lectures observed and completed lesson plan

Throughout this experience I observed several course integrated library instruction sessions, almost one from every librarian. These notes I took are definitely my unfiltered thoughts from each librarian and the take aways I had from each lecture. Even if I observed a person several times, there was always something more I could learn. I also tried to integrate the parts that I thought were the best from each librarian in the lectures I taught.

Some of the key points that I find most effective for my teaching style are:

  • Have the students work with you. While these might be demonstrative lectures, it also heavily relies on the students learning how to use the databases and search tools themselves.

  • Create a plan for the class that is tailored to the assignment. Work with the professor/faculty member to make sure that you know which tools would be most beneficial to the students. Maybe some need more help with certain databases than others, maybe spend less time on citations.

  • Don't be afraid to get to know the students. The more personable you are during these lectures, the more likely it is that they'll come to you for help in the future. You'll start to create some recognition with them and build a trusting relationship that's necessary during research.

  • Do some vocal exercises and have water nearby! It's a lot of talking.
