SLO: Evaluate academic librarianship as a career
Task: Meet with CSULB librarians to better understand responsibilities and duties. Create an application packet that would be usable when applying for academic librarian positions
Evidence: An evaluative spreadsheet with notes regarding academic librarianship as a career. Completed job application packet for academic librarianship positions that has been reviewed by multiple faculty
For my evidence I am uploading a copy of a cover letter I wrote as well as two similar/different CV's, as certain elements have been changed to focus on one of my two interest trajectories: academics and archives. I may, in the future, write one specifically for public libraries, but that was not my focus at this time.
This was a particularly challenging and rewarding experience. While I have written resumes and have several versions, an actual CV that goes more in depth and can be as long as I need to convey my skills seemed wild. I hate wordiness, and this was definitely an exercise in being wordy. In particular, the notes I received regarding my cover letter are points I'm looking to edit when I get a chance. Feedback I received (this is the original, unedited version) were:
Make sure to talk about every requirement and how you fulfil it. If you haven't had the experience to fulfil that requirement, don't be afraid to say that you're willing to learn it
Don't undersell or diminish the work you've done
As I plan to apply to jobs soon, I will be keeping this feedback in mind. I do have a good base layer to build upon now, so hopefully when I write a cover letter for a job I actually want I'll be able to be more prepared.
